What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are also known as invisible aligners. They are an orthodontic treatment that helps correct misaligned or crooked teeth. The aligners are designed to provide the ultimate convenience and mobility.

Clear aligners use clear, removable trays to help straighten teeth. Each aligner tray is tailor-made to fit over your teeth to help gradually move your teeth into their final position.

Both braces and aligners use moderate force to control tooth movement, but clear aligners do not require metal wires or brackets. Each aligner moves the teeth in small increments until the desired position is achieved.

Here are some of the advantages of clear aligners:

  • Nearly-invisible and removable
  • Customized to your needs
  • Can be used to treat overbites, crowded teeth, underbites, crossbites, diastemas, open bites, misaligned primary baby teeth, and more!
  • Fewer dietary restrictions

Benefits of Clear Aligners

Teeth aligners can offer some benefits that traditional braces do not. Clear teeth aligners make it easier to brush and floss because they can be removed for cleaning. Another advantage is that food does not get stuck like with traditional braces.

Since aligners do not have brackets or wires that can loosen, they typically require fewer repairs and fewer emergency visits. The biggest advantage to clear aligners is that they are nearly invisible, which means most people do not realize you are wearing them.

Clear teeth aligners are a great substitute for someone who wants straighter teeth but does not want to have traditional braces. Clear aligners are beneficial for patients who have had previous orthodontic treatment and want to make minor corrections to their smile. Several advantages to using clear aligners include:

The ability to be removed to make it easier to brush and floss after eating

More comfortable and less likely to irritate your gums and cheeks

How Do Clear Aligners Work?

Moving teeth is a mix of science and art. The objective is to obtain a healthy bite where your top and bottom teeth ideally fit together. The process needs to be supervised by an orthodontist who is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).

For successful teeth straightening, you must wear them for a minimum of 20-22 hours per day. The clear aligners are made from clear plastic or acrylic material that fits tightly over the teeth. Clear aligners can be removed while eating, brushing, and flossing. Each set of aligners will gradually move the teeth into the desired position.

Once treatment is complete, you will have another digital scan taken of your newly straightened teeth. A clear retainer will then be made using this scan. You should wear your retainer every night while sleeping to help ensure your teeth do not become misaligned again over time.

How Long Does Aligner Treatment Take?

Treatment time with invisible teeth aligners is based on your individual needs and how much your teeth need repositioning. The more your bite is off or, the more crooked your teeth are, the longer treatment will take. Treatment with clear aligners typically takes between 12 and 24 months.
